“How far can a thermal scope see?” is the first question most hunters ask — and the honest answer is: it depends on what you mean by “see.” Thermal range is measured in three tiers: detection, recognition, and identification. Here’s what each means and what to expect.
Detection vs recognition vs identification
Detection = you see a heat blob (something warm is there). Recognition = you can tell it’s an animal. Identification = you can confirm it’s a hog vs a deer. Detection range is always the longest; identification is much shorter.
Typical ranges by resolution
A 640×512 thermal with a 50mm lens can detect a hog-sized heat signature past 1,500–2,000 yards, recognize it around 700–900 yards, and identify it near 400–600 yards. A 384 sensor cuts those numbers roughly in half. Compare optics in thermal scopes.
What changes the range?

Choosing range for your hunt
