Learning how to choose a thermal scope saves you from overpaying — or buying too little scope for your hunt. Five specs decide performance: resolution, detection range, refresh rate, thermal sensitivity (NETD), and lens/magnification. Here’s what each means in the field.
Sensor resolution
Resolution (256×192, 384×288, or 640×512) is the number of thermal pixels. Higher resolution means a sharper image and longer identification range. 640×512 is the standard for serious hunters; 384×288 is a great value.
Detection range
Detection range is how far the scope picks up a heat signature. It depends on sensor resolution and objective lens size — a 640 sensor with a 50mm lens detects a deer-sized target well past 1,500 yards. Bigger lens = more range but narrower field of view.
Refresh rate
Measured in Hz, refresh rate controls image smoothness. 50Hz is ideal for tracking moving game; 25Hz is fine for stationary observation but can look choppy.
NETD (thermal sensitivity)
NETD, in millikelvin (mK), measures the smallest temperature difference the scope can detect. Lower is better — sub-25mK optics give a cleaner, higher-contrast image, especially in humid or rainy conditions.
Magnification and reticles
